What Makes Good Prams?

A pram, also referred to as a pushchair, stroller or Sling, is the most popular method of transport for infants and toddlers. A great pram combines safety, comfort and design that makes walking enjoyable for all family members.

The R for Rabbit Poppins Stylish Baby Stroller is a great stroller for children from newborns to three years old. The reversible handle lets you to rotate the seat so your child can face you or the world around them.

Comfort

You want your child to be at ease when you're out with them. There are prams that ensure your baby doesn't feel any discomfort.

All the prams in this guide allow your baby lay flat. This is crucial for babies as it increases oxygenation and helps support their spine and hips. They also come with seats that can be changed to a more upright position when your baby is old enough to sit.

Venicci egg2 is a premium pram with a cocoon feeling for your baby. It features smooth, curvaceous lines and a bucket-shaped seat which doesn't recline into flat, but it does have padding on the mattress and a liner. It's also a little lighter than the majority of prams, weighing under 8kg but still has an extremely sturdy chassis and grained leather details and air-filled tyres that are puncture-proof, and can be used in more rural environments.

If you're looking for something a bit less expensive but still with the same style Minu V2 (minus carrycot) is another excellent choice. The swish-looking one-hand steer model isn't as lightweight stroller than some of the other prams we tested but it does have a large storage basket, as well as an extended hood with UPF50+ protection, which will keep your baby safe and shaded.

If you're a first-time parent facing pram we recommend a travel system bundle which includes a pram and a car seat that are attached to the same frame. This makes it much easier for parents to move their child from the car to the pram without having to get them up. The Bugaboo Dragonfly is a great example of a stylish and useful pram for travel that can be converted easily from a'pramette' that lies flat to a pushchair for toddlers that is compatible with the Graco i-Size car seat.

Safety

A pram should be equipped with a five-point safety harness to keep your baby safe and free of any gaps to entrap their legs or head. The straps must be cushioned and easy to adjust as they expand. Check the buckles on the harness to make sure they're not cracked and have signs of wear. Each year, many children are admitted to hospitals because of injuries caused by prams or strollers strollers. Tipping over is the most common cause of these injuries. Even the strongest prams could tip over when you strap your bags onto the handles or if the child is wriggling or squirming and falls out or in the seat before the harness has been tightened.

Another common cause of injuries is falling from the pram or stroller. If the harness of a baby isn't secured correctly it can cause them to fall from the stroller, causing head or neck injuries. It is therefore important to make sure that the buckle on the harness is securely clicked into place.

Some good prams also have a canopy that can be reversible to shield your baby from the sun in both directions. This feature is useful since you don't need to wake your baby every time you change their position in the stroller, or when you go in stores and out. There are other features that could be useful, like an eating tray for your toddler or child and drink holders. There is also a basket for shopping underneath the seat.

It is not advisable to leave a child sleeping in their stroller unless they are within their reach at all times. Babies are prone to wiggle while asleep, which could cause them to roll out of the stroller or pram. This could result in suffocation and strangulation. A pram or stroller is not an alternative to a cot and should be used only for brief periods during the day.

The majority of prams require you take them apart in order to put them in the boot of your car so it's recommended to familiarize yourself with this procedure before purchasing one. Also, consider how it is easy to put the various sections back together and click to put them back together.

Durability

A pram must be able endure a long time of wear. You should ensure that your stroller can withstand slippery walks, as well as multiple car trips. You should ensure that your pram is a color or pattern that won't fade easily so that you don't appear as if you've slipped out of fashion.

The most reliable prams are constructed of top-quality materials and built to last. Look for durable materials with sturdy tires, as well as an effective suspension system. The top prams have a compact fold, so they can be easily stored in your garage or boot when not in use.

All prams on this list allow a baby to lay flat, which is vital for newborns as it improves oxygen saturation levels and aids in the development of their hips and spine. A lot of them are designed to adapt to your child's needs and some having a carrycot or fully-reclined seat that can be moved off and on the frame for when your little one outgrows it.

If you are considering buying a pram for the first time it is recommended to consider a system that includes both a carrycot and a car seat may be of interest. Our tester for parents Jaya was a fan of the Graco Near2Me System she used with her 10-month old son. It comes with a handy feature that can raise or lower your baby at the touch of a button so you can keep eye contact and keep them close which she described as being important to her since he was at an exploratory stage.

The Bugaboo Fox 3 is another option that our tester Jess Bird tried with her two children Effie and Boden (pictured above). It's a pushchair that can be converted from a single pushchair a double with 30 different configurations. It also comes with a sun canopy that can be extended and puncture-proof tires. It's not cheap, but you could use it for more than one child, if you need to and, just like the iCandy Orange 3, can be used from birth with the included carrycot.

Style

Newborns need to lay flat as much as they can to help develop and improve oxygen saturation in their lungs, so it is essential that all prams support this. Some models provide a flat surface with a fully-reclinable carrycot while others feature seats that recline to an unflat position.

The Graco Near2Me has the latter feature and is fantastic at what it does as our parent tester Jaya found when she tested it with her son who was 10 months old. She was thrilled to be able to raise or lower her baby by pressing an button, keeping him in the same position, while still maintaining closeness and eye contact.

The frame is ideal to take a stroll around town, and the puncture-proof tires allow you to take it off the road or on rough terrain. It's an excellent choice if you plan to have a second child in the future, as it can easily be converted from a single pushchair into a twin or double.

The Bugaboo Dragonfly looks and feels like a premium, stylish option. It's ideal for babies as it includes a carrycot which can be folded flat and is compatible with car seats when purchased separately. It can be folded with the carrycot still in place This is an option that not all prams have. This saves time and makes it more convenient to use.
