Nine Things That Your Parent Taught You About Cribs Beds

Choosing Cribs Beds For Your Baby

Sleep is an essential part of the life of your baby. A crib lets them develop the habit of sleeping independently, and it keeps both of you safe during the night.

There are many types of cribs, all with different dimensions styles, designs, and mattress support heights. We searched for cribs that are safe, simple to use, and in line with the latest design trends.

Size

A crib is a tiny bed designed for infants and toddlers. There are a variety of cribs, however they are all smaller than a toddler's bed, and provide a safe and secure sleeping space for your child. Some cribs have wheels, so they can be moved around the home. Most are designed to decrease SIDS risk by providing a cozy and supportive environment similar to the baby's womb.

While many parents would like their children to remain in a crib for as long as is possible, some will be ready to move them to a toddler bed faster than others. The most common type of crib is a standard crib that is suitable from birth until the time your child is about 18 months older or has the capacity of getting out.

Bassinets are suitable for babies from birth to four months, or until they become too big. These are smaller and smaller than cribs, but can offer the comfort and closeness to parents that some infants need during their first few months. They are also more mobile which makes them a desirable option if you are unsure of what kind of bedding you will prefer for your child.

Both bassinets and cribs have safety guidelines that must be followed in order to protect your child. There should not be a gap of more than two fingers between the crib's frame and mattress, and the slats must not be sagging or missing. Also, the bed should not have cutouts on the headboard or footboard as these can trap a child's head or legs and increase the risk of being suffocated.

Cribs are available in different designs and finishes, and some have integrated changing tables or shelving units. If you intend to breastfeed, these cribs could be very convenient as you can feed your baby in the crib. If you're short of space or have a limited budget you can still find cribs with the essentials.

If you're willing pay a little more you can purchase cribs that can be converted into toddler beds, daybeds or sofas. These are often called 4-in-1 cribs. They can be an ideal choice for parents who do not want to invest in a new crib every time their child outgrows their crib they currently have.

Style

As you look for the perfect crib, think about the style of the crib in relation to the decor of your baby's nursery. If the design of your home is influenced by a particular direction like modern or rustic, you may want to choose one that matches the overall theme. There are many cribs available in a variety of shapes and styles, with natural wood or color finishes.

Cribs have a long tradition of providing safe sleeping environments for infants. At first, they were just cribs that could be rolled. As the understanding of child safety evolved and cribs became more stationary and more secure, crib designs evolved to offer more protection from falls or entrapment. The cribs of today are made with features like sturdy construction, the right spacing of slats and non-toxic materials. They focus on your baby's safety and well-being.

There are cribs that include shelves or a changing table unit to make it easier for parents during the infant stage. This type crib is not suitable for babies who are ready to stand or climb. It could make it easier for them to escape.

Some cribs have adjustable mattress support heights, so you can lower the mattress as your baby grows. The higher setting is great crib for babies, and the lower one is recommended before your baby begins to roll or sit up in bed, which usually happens by the time they reach the age of a year.

The crib's mattress can be set on a single-piece board, a wood-slat grid or spring-wire frames. Both What to Expect, and Baby Bargains, recommend a metal spring frame since it's more sturdy than wooden slats that can break or loosen with time. The base should be tight and firm to stop the excessive air from moving around the mattress. This could cause an hazard of suffocation to infants.

If you're looking to keep your baby in a crib as long as you can, then consider a 4-in-1 crib that can be converted into a toddler bed, daybed and eventually, a full-size bed. They usually have removable rails to allow the transition to an adult bed much easier and often come with adjustable mattress heights.

Safety

In the United States, this includes certifications from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and compliance with ASTM International standards. Check for these certifications on the crib's packaging or in its description. Also, look over the crib frame for any defects in the paint or the wood which could pose a threat to your child.

If you are planning to purchase a new crib mattress for your baby's crib choose the most firm one you can find. This will help reduce the chance of accidental suffocation which is the leading cause of sudden infant death syndrome. Also, make sure the mattress fits snugly in the crib. If the mattress is too big or too small could be risky for your baby as they could be trapped between the mattress's sides and the headboard or crib sides.

Certain reports of nonfatal accidents that include 21 deaths reported in the NPR, and two deaths that were reported during the NPR Update, involve crib beds that are too soft. These incidents can lead to a range of hazards, including gaps between the mattress and the crib side or head and footboard that create entrapment risks and infants slipping on or being trapped between the mattress and the headboard or wall pillows and blankets, which pose suffocation risks; and mattresses that are overheated and cause infants to be afflicted with burns, rashes and other health issues.

Certain manufacturers are now advertising "breathable" crib mattresses that they claim will promote safe sleep, and prevent rebreathing or breathing in carbon dioxide from your baby's body. This is thought to contribute to SIDS. However, there is no evidence from an epidemiological perspective that breathable mattresses reduce the risk of SIDS.

Conversion

When you welcome a new baby to your family, you'll likely need to buy lots of new items. This includes everything from clothing and toys to furniture for the nursery. Investing in cribs which transform into toddler beds or full size cot beds for sale can help you save money on furniture and make the transition to the next stage of life easier for your child and your family. These conversion kits can be bought for a variety of cots, and come with a footboard and headboard. Some models are GREENGUARD Certified Gold, which means that they emit low levels of chemicals for a healthier indoor atmosphere.

If you decide to go with convertible cribs or a standard crib it is important to buy the right mattress so that your child is comfortable night's rest. Choose between foam, innerspring, or gel mattresses that come in various sizes to meet your needs. Pick a foam mattress that is at minimum 2 3/8 inches in thickness or an innerspring mattress that is in compliance with the safety standards of the federal government.

When your child is ready to move from the crib, you will have to buy an adult bed or a full-size bed conversion kit. You should do this before your child turns 2 to ensure a smooth transition and that your child is comfortable. Once your mattress and crib conversion kit is installed, converting the crib to a toddler or full-size bed will take no more than 30 minutes when you have two people.

A few things can help make the transition to a toddler bed more relaxing for your child, including keeping the bedroom decor and bedding uniform and moving the toddler bed into the same room as their crib. Getting your child involved in the transition process by giving them a choice of toys or stuffed animals to sleep with and encouraging them to go to bed on a regular basis will help them adjust to the new sleeping arrangement.

A crib that converts into a full-size bed is a great option to extend the time-to-value of your investment. It also offers a Mini Cot Bed for your teenager. Conversion kits are available in many designs to match furniture and are compatible with a variety of mattresses including twin or full size.
